FUN THINGS TO DO IN SAN FRANCISCO AT NIGHT
Whether you're flying solo, planning a first date, or just visiting for the weekend, here are low-pressure, actually-fun ways to spend a San Francisco evening.
Solo and proud of it
- See live improv. A comedy show is one of the easiest things to do alone in San Francisco — you're never the only solo guest, the audience is part of the fun, and there's zero awkward small talk. Phasers On Stun performs fully improvised Star Trek-style episodes at EndGames Improv, and solo travelers and locals are always welcome.
- Late-night museum hours. Check for after-dark events at the Exploratorium, de Young, or SFMOMA — some offer adults-only nights with drinks, music, and fewer crowds.
- Neighborhood walk with a soundtrack. North Beach, the Mission, or the Embarcadero after dark feel completely different than during the day. Pair it with a podcast or just people-watch.
First date ideas that aren't awkward
- A show with built-in conversation starters. A Star Trek improv comedy show gives you something to laugh about together and plenty to talk about afterward. No pressure to perform — the performers do all the work.
- Sunset + snacks. Grab a burrito in the Mission, watch the sunset from Dolores Park, then catch a 7 PM show nearby.
- Arcade bars. Coin-Op, Emporium, and Barcade give you something to do with your hands while you talk — low eye contact, high fun.
Group nights out
- Dinner + improv. EndGames Improv is in the heart of the city, surrounded by great restaurants. Make it a full night: dinner, then a 7 PM show.
- Trivia or karaoke. San Francisco has themed trivia nights almost every night of the week, plus private karaoke rooms in Japantown and the Richmond.
- Comedy crawl. Start with an improv show, then hop to a nearby bar for a nightcap.
