STAR TREK TURNS 60 IN THE BAY AREA
Sixty years after the original series first aired, Star Trek is coming back to Bay Area big screens — and Starfleet's hometown of San Francisco is the best place in the galaxy to celebrate. Here's what's playing and how to make a full Trek night of it.
Classic films back on the big screen
The first four Star Trek films are returning to Bay Area theaters September 4–8, 2026, each paired with the original series episode that inspired it.
- Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Director's Edition. Paired with the original series episode "The Changeling".
- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Director's Cut. Paired with the original series episode "Space Seed".
- Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Paired with the original series episode "Amok Time".
- Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Paired with a classic original series episode — and it's the one filmed in San Francisco.

The movies end. The missions don't have to. Phasers On Stun is San Francisco's Star Trek improv group: the audience shouts out episode titles, votes on a favorite, and the crew of the USS Golden Gate performs two fully improvised Star Trek-style episodes on the spot. No script, no net, all fun.
It's an affectionate take on the genre — played straight enough that the stakes feel real, which is exactly what makes the absurd moments land. You don't need to know Star Trek to enjoy it, but fans get extra jokes. Shows run about an hour and tickets are typically under $25.

Pair a matinee screening with a walk through the Presidio (Starfleet Academy's canonical home turf), dinner in the Mission, and a Phasers On Stun show at night. Whether you're a lifelong fan or bringing someone who's never seen an episode, it's the most Star Trek weekend you can have without leaving the city.
