WHAT IS STAR TREK IMPROV?

Star Trek improv is live, unscripted storytelling in the style of Star Trek. We perform two back-to-back episodes about the USS Golden Gate — while Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise are off in another quadrant — created entirely from an audience-suggested title.

How a show works

  1. 1The audience names the episode. The crowd calls out titles — the sillier the better. We take three of them, the audience votes, and the winning title becomes the episode.
  2. 2The crew of the USS Golden Gate beams in. Performers take on a captain, science officer, engineer, medical officer, and the occasional doomed security ensign, then discover the ship's mission as they play it. Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise are in another quadrant, so this ship is on its own.
  3. 3The story is played straight. We aim to honor the genre, not mock it. Strange new worlds, alien diplomacy, technobabble solutions, and a real crisis — all invented in the moment, with stakes that feel genuine so the absurd parts actually land.
  4. 4Then it happens again. We perform two back-to-back episodes from two different titles, so every night is its own double feature.

Why the Star Trek frame works so well

Improvisers need shared assumptions to build a story fast. Star Trek supplies them instantly: a ship, a clear chain of command, a mission, and a moral question to argue about. Everyone in the room — cast and audience alike — already knows the rules of the universe, which frees the performers to tell a real story in this genre instead of explaining the setup.

It's affectionate parody, not mockery. We don't try to be funny; we play the genre straight enough that the stakes feel real, which is exactly what makes the absurd parts land. The result is two back-to-back episodes that feel like a real Star Trek story — just one that nobody, including us, has seen before.

Common questions

What is Star Trek improv?

Star Trek improv is live, unscripted storytelling in the style of Star Trek. The audience suggests three episode titles, votes on the one they want to see, and the cast improvises a complete episode on the USS Golden Gate — while Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise are off in another quadrant. We perform two back-to-back episodes, honoring the genre and playing it straight enough that the stakes feel real.

Do I need to know Star Trek to enjoy it?

No. The story stands on its own as science-fiction theater. Fans catch extra jokes and references, but newcomers follow along easily — the tropes are familiar from almost any sci-fi show.

How is it different from regular improv?

It uses a genre frame. Instead of short games, the cast plays one sustained story at a time — a ship, a chain of command, a mission, and a moral question — closer to improvised television than to stand-up. We aren't trying to be funny; we're trying to tell a real story in this genre, and the comedy lands because the stakes feel genuine.
